Weather Pattern to shift next week

"EAGLE COUNTY, Colorado — The snow news the valley has been waiting for is finally here — sort of.

The storm track pattern for storms heading into the United States from the Pacific Ocean appears to be shifting south, which is great news for northern ski resorts in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming and Montana — and possibly good news for ski resorts in the northern part of Colorado.

The storm track has been following a path this winter that has sent Pacific storms entering North America through British Columbia and Alberta before turning south in Saskatchewan and down through North Dakota and Minnesota, and then following an eastern path across the Midwest and the East. But as of Jan. 16, the path appears to be changing. The new track shows storms entering around Oregon and continuing east and slightly south — the results for Colorado, however, will depend on each individual storm, said Joel Gratz, a meteorologist who runs the powder forecast website opensnow.com.

“The overall weather pattern for the western United States is definitely changing next week compared to what they were over the last two months,” Gratz said. “Unfortunately, weather patterns don't detail powder days.”

But a change in the weather pattern means “slightly more favorable” conditions for better snow in Colorado, Gratz said, and even slightly better is music to the ears of many local skiers and snowboarders.

The pattern changes show more certainty for snow for the north, so it's a waiting game to see whether that snow materializes for Colorado, Gratz said.

“Next week is what starts to make me pull my hair out because we're so close to possibly getting some snow,” Gratz said. “That (weather pattern) shift is going to happen — all the models are on board — it's definitely going to happen, but whether that shift is ultimately really, really good for Colorado or just kind of a little bit better (isn't certain).”

Any shift is good news, though. Backcountry snowboarder and mountaineer Zach Taylor, of Avon, said he's “psyched to see all the patterns changing.”

“The likelihood of us getting snow increasing is definitely exciting,” Taylor said.

Taylor also knows that a lot of new snow brings dangers along with it. Because of the way winter has turned out so far, there are weak layers of snow that will become prime avalanche terrain once heavier snow falls on top. Taylor said all the weak, unstable snow in the snowpack right now is a big cause for concern if and when larger snowstorms hit.

“We're going to see massive avalanche cycles if (storms) materialize,” Taylor said. “It is something I am worried about.”

Taylor taught an avalanche class behind Beaver Creek a few days ago and skinned up the Bald Spot. He is well trained and can recognize the dangers right away. A foot or two of snow would be enough to create really dangerous avalanche conditions, he said.

“There may be a period of time where I won't even go to East Vail, period, or out of Beaver Creek, period,” Taylor said. “Depending on what happens, I might just not go into the backcountry at all.”

Coming from a guy like Taylor, who has climbed all of the state's 14,000-foot mountain peaks and has snowboarded down about half of those peaks, it's obvious the danger could be real.

Ethan Greene, director at the Colorado Avalanche Information Center, said there are places where the danger is already increasing, but a foot of snow in a 24-hour period, for example, “could change things significantly.”

“We're actually in a pretty bad set-up for when it does start snowing again,” Greene said.

Greene said there's also a concern this season for avalanches being triggered in odd ways.

“One thing we're worried about is avalanches from relatively low angle terrain — areas you might consider safe in some years might not be safe if we go into a big storm cycle coming up,” Greene said. “It's not going to be very consistent. There's a complex pattern in the layers in the snow right now. You'll see safe areas in close proximity to areas that are very dangerous.”

Even a few inches of snow that fell around the state Wednesday — Vail Mountain reported 6 inches and Beaver Creek reported 4 inches — was enough to change the avalanche danger from moderate to considerable. The Colorado Avalanche Information Center reported wind slabs about 1 foot thick on northeast, east, southeast and south aspects as of Thursday morning. The center reported a low danger below tree line, but said backcountry travelers should still look for unstable snow.

That's the key piece of advice people like Taylor follow — he said too often people make the mistake of looking for stable snow rather than unstable snow.

“You have to look for signs of instability, not for signs of stability — you can always find the stability,” Taylor said. “Always err on the side of caution; read the avalanche report every day before you go out.”"
Featuring a wide array of cars, aircraft, and motorcycles, the event is the only one of its kind on the Western Slope. ?We're expecting over 230 cars, aircraft, and motorcycles this year, which is nearly double last year's display,? says Vail Automotive Classic Board member, Doug Landin. ?Also new this year, we'll be giving awards for cars in nine categories, motorcycles in two categories, and aircraft in two categories. There's plenty to do with airplane rides, helicopter rides, emergency and military vehicle tours, scale models, and more.?

In 2010, over 3,000 people attended the First Annual Wheels and Wings Show in Gypsum with over 125 cars, 20 motorcycles and 20 aircraft on display. Vail Village welcomed nearly 5,000 guests to the show the following day to admire the over 60 cars on display.
Restaurant Month in Vail

VAIL, Colorado — For years, Vail restaurants have tried to attract diners with special deals in the fall. Fewer diners paying less for meals isn't a good thing for the bottom line, but that's the model. Vail Restaurant Month is trying to change that standard.

The four-week event is entering its second year this fall, with a thousands-deep email database and almost 800 Facebook friends. The month of celebrating Vail's culinary culture also has added local and national sponsors for its second go-round. It's exactly what event founder Ilene Rapkin hoped for.

Rapkin, who owns New York-based I Openers, a marketing and promotions company, is a longtime fan of Vail. She started Vail Restaurant Month as a way to draw people to Vail during an underappreciated season and seems to be having some success. Last year's events drew plenty of fans, from private tastings to kids' cooking classes.

But besides drawing people, Rapkin said she's dedicated to a more bottom-line-based mission — no discounts.

Vail Mountain Lodge & Spa general manager Frank Johnson said that's a good thing for business at Terra Bistro, the lodge's restaurant.

“It's an opportunity to try to put a program together in the fall that didn't involve half-price food,” Johnson said. “That had been our default for years — we were taking people who'd pay anyway and giving them these discounts.”

Beyond the bottom line, though, Vail Restaurant Month events are a chance to get businesses besides restaurants involved in fun events during a traditionally slow time.

“Most people thought it was a home run last year,” Rapkin said, citing consistently high scores from an independent survey of both businesses and guests.

This year, Rapkin said the events will be more focused — “Last year we might have had a few too many repetitions,” she said. This year will bring more one-time events, featuring more sponsors.

“Sponsorship money came a little easier this year,” Rapkin said. “But if you have national sponsors that believe in Vail in the fall, we can grow this event.”

And, while the themes of the weeks are the same as last year, there will be variations on those themes.

Masters Gallery owner Rayla Kundolf last year hosted a brunch at the gallery. This year, she's hosting a reception for Belvedere Red, the premium vodka brand's contribution to U2 singer Bono's “Red” program, which donates money to charity.

“It's more than about food — it's about a sense of community,” Kundolf said.

Other retail stores have signed on for other events this year, including a fashion show at Luca Bruno in Vail Village.

Kundolf is an enthusiastic advocate of events to build business and said Vail Restaurant Month is a chance to take advantage of a couple of growing trends: using food as a draw to the resort and pushing the traditional boundaries of the tourist seasons.

“This helps take business into mid-October,” she said. “It's getting us closer and closer to that year-round model.”

Johnson, who's been in the valley long enough to have seen any number of events come and go, isn't ready to pronounce Vail Restaurant Month a tradition just yet.

“But it certainly can be successful,” Johnson said. “And I think it will be more successful as time goes on.”
Pro Cycling Challenge coming to Eagle County this week

"VAIL, Colorado — Colorado's majestic landscape is the perfect place for a major professional cycling race — locals know it, and they're just glad others are once again realizing it.

The USA Pro Cycling Challenge, which began Monday with the prologue in Colorado Springs, has technically been years in the making. Ever since Colorado's last major stage race, the Coors Classic, ceased, cyclists and promoters have been hoping a new race would take its place.

Peter Davis, of Eagle, a former professional cyclist who raced in the Coors Classic, said the event was supposed to come back the very next year after it lost its Coors sponsorship, but it never happened. Organizers had AT&T in line to take over the sponsorship, but that never happened, either. Then the dreams of reinventing the race just sort of faded away, Davis remembers.

The concept of a major stage race in the United States isn't new, and there are certainly other major stage races such as the Tour of California and the Tour of Utah, but the USA Pro Cycling Challenge is going to be big.

“I'm somewhat blown away that it came together,” Davis said.

With the backing of former Colorado Gov. Bill Ritter and professional cycling superstar Lance Armstrong, the event is expected to be huge already, even in its inaugural year.

Versus is airing live broadcasts of the event every day, with NBC airing the final stage live on Aug. 28.

The biggest names in cycling, including all of the Tour de France podium finishers, are racing.

Charlie Brown, owner of Mountain Pedaler in Eagle, said the cycling community is “psyched.”

“It's a huge deal. It's as big as anything in Colorado all together,” Brown said. “I hope it's extremely successful and comes back every year.”

What impresses Bruce Kelly about the race is that it was organized at all. Kelly, who owns Pedal Power in Eagle-Vail, said cyclists are outnumbered in the state and people typically fight pretty hard to keep events like this — and all of the road closures and inconveniences that come with them — from happening.

Kelly will be watching as the race unfolds and said he'll be hoping for the best.

“The problem is, will the sponsors — the people who have the money — want to do it again? Are they going to ante up again?” Kelly said. “You've got to hope that economically, it is at least somewhat successful. ... Hopefully it'll work.”

The Tour of America?

Jeff Mohrman, the owner at Colorado Bike Service in Eagle-Vail, said Colorado's geography has everything necessary for a great stage race.

“We're pretty excited for it,” he said. “I think it's good not only for the cycling community, but the sports community and everybody.”

For those who never saw a Coors Classic race through Colorado in the 1980s, Kelly said the USA Pro Cycling Challenge can't be missed.

“I think for people who have never seen it, they should go and see it,” Kelly said. “Go and see how fast these guys ride — it's super-human. If you're any kind of sports or athletic fan, you can appreciate what these guys are doing — even if you don't like cycling.”

Davis is hopeful the race returns next year and for many years to come. He thinks that taking the sponsor's name out of the title was a good move by promoters, too, although he doesn't love the title of the event as it stands today.

“Like the Tour de France — it doesn't have a titled sponsor per se,” Davis said. “That almost seals your fate if you do that.”

By taking “Quiznos” out of the title, and also by not calling it the Tour of Colorado, the door is open for the race's future, Kelly said. The Coors Classic's demise had a lot to do with the title sponsor backing out, he said.

And without following the path of other United States stage races and calling this the Tour of Colorado, the door is wide open for where the race can go in the future.

“I think the idea behind this is that it could be the Tour of America,” Davis said, adding that it could become a multi-state stage race.

Davis is going to be a true cycling fan next week — he's heading up to the top of Independence Pass tonight to camp out on the side of the road, just as you see spectators doing on TV during the Tour de France.

He thinks if a racer is going to gain time or try to get ahead, it's going to happen on Independence Pass.

The time trial in Vail is another place where time is going to be gained and lost, and Davis will be right there watching.

“I truly hope it's not just one year and the thing kind of fades away,” Davis said.
